In 1989, on the occasion of the 9th International Hansa Day of the
New Age in the City of Hamburg, the Hanseatic Town of Lünen an der
Lippe successfully started a unique art project of the Modern Age,
that carried its significance well beyond national borders. The project
was entitled the "Lünen Hansetuch" and was not only involved
to Hanseatic towns and cities but also locations which maintained
trading posts with the Hanseatic League. It is a collection of paintings
which reflects the artistic variety, creativity and unifying character of
the Hanse concept.
By the time of the town's 650th anniversary celebrations in 1991,
the collection had grown to a total of 29 works from 13 nations. The
"Lünen Hansetuch" is now regarded as a document of representative,
contemporary art in the spirit of the Hansa.
In 2019, Lünen will be hosting the 39th International Hansa Day. By
this time, the collection will have expanded to 50 works. The Hanseatic
town on the Lippe will by then be proud to have the largest
modern-day collection of Hanseatic art.
